Origins

Joy McCann & Hugh Culverhouse

Joy McCann met Hugh Culverhouse when he delivered dry cleaning to her sorority house on the campus of the University of Alabama. They quickly became college sweethearts and married before Hugh left for World War Two. They returned to the university where he taught accountancy and earned his law degree. Joy won the Alabama Women’s State Golf Championship in 1947 and 1949, the years their children were born. They were a couple destined for a successful future.

Hugh Culverhouse

Hugh Culverhouse was interested in everything: from sports to opera; he was the modern Renaissance man. He made his living as a tax attorney and land developer; later in life he was awarded the NFL expansion team which became the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Joy McCann

Joy McCann, a sociology major, has always been a supporter of children in need. When she was a member of the Junior League, children’s projects were where she spent her volunteer time. The family’s house was where the neighborhood children gathered. She was always interested in their stories and needs.

The Family Foundation

Before Hugh passed away, he created a family foundation to support those thirty-six charities which were dear to him. Today his wife Joy continues the family legacy of funding these programs as she and the board saw fit.
