Addressing Clinical Needs
The Children's Home
Supplying the Clinical Treatment Center with extra resources to improve various clinical and therapeutic activities within the Residential Treatment Program serving children who have suffered abuse, abandonment and neglect. Grant includes specialized continuing education courses for nurses and therapists to broaden their ability to address the special needs of treated children.
Operation Graduation & YMCA READS!
Sarasota Family YMCA
Supporting an after school program that promotes struggling and minority students while building parental involvement in their children’s education. All students are referred by their school and participate in the program free of charge. As one of 25 pilot sites for the YMCA READS! Literacy Program, the program is designed as a mentoring initiative combining individual attention with a research-based curriculum.
Young Alumni Emergency Needs
The Children’s Home
Providing emergency discretionary funds to offer a support system for young adult alumni of the Children’s Home during the years in which, under other circumstances, they would typically rely on parental support to deal with emergency situations. Emergency support is intended to allow young adults to overcome obstacles in education and career opportunities, such as: emergency childcare to attend an employment interview, transportation assistance for school or work, emergency medical care, and covering college textbook costs.
Special Needs Adaptive Program
Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA
Providing programming to enhance socialization, motor skills, self-esteem and academic performance for mentally and physically handicapped youth. Funded activities for special needs youth include swimming classes, gymnastic classes, adaptive fitness classes, family support and adaptive life skills.
Youth Diversion Initiative
Boy Scouts of America Gulf Ridge Council
Pilot year funding for program providing an alternative to formal court proceedings and adjudication records for first-time non-violent youth offenders. The program relies on Boy Scout led activities, classes, volunteer speakers and law enforcement educators to help reduce repeat offense rates among participating youth.

To provide programs that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls from disadvantaged circumstances by instilling a sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging, a sense of power or influence and creating an environment that helps girls and boys achieve their full potential.
Hispanic Outreach Program
Boy Scouts of America Gulf Ridge Council
To increase recruitment of Hispanic youth and provide Scouting programs aimed at Hispanic youth in Hillsborough County, including Character Education programs, Summer Programs, Drug Elimination programs and career training. The grant will provide salary support for a full-time Scout professional and assist their efforts to recruit Hispanic youth, form strategic partnerships with Hispanic service providers, and provide training and support to Hispanic Scout programs.

For an after-school, summer and outreach program which provides girls access to technology, science and mathematics instruction.
Workforce Empowerment
Tampa Metropolitan YMCA
To support programs providing services that strengthen independence, education and employment readiness in youth aging out of the child protective system but who do not meet eligibility for child protective service programs.
Street SMART Initiative
Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay
The Street SMART Program helps young people identify, resist and resolve negative conflict to prevent or reduce violence in their communities through learning and organizing community events that celebrate anti-gang and anti-violence themes.
Imagination Library
United Way of Tampa Bay
For a partnership project with Hillsborough County Libraries that provides each child in the county with new, age-appropriate books from birth to age five.
Sulphur Springs Community Learning Center
Tampa Metropolitan YMCA
To create a “YMCA without walls” at Sulphur Springs Elementary to catalyze school-community integration, social-cultural enrichment and life long learning for students, parents and community members.
Electronic Fingerprinting Equipment
The Children’s Home
To obtain the equipment necessary to adapt the Children’s Home’s management of volunteers and employees according to the requirements of new Florida state legislation, with the purpose of increasing the children’s security.
Family Strengthening Program
Girls Inc. of Sarasota County
To support on-site counseling services and case management for girls on a full range of family and personal issues ranging from risky behavior to divorce to physical and sexual abuse.

Arts & Culture
Partners in Art Education Program
Tampa Museum of Art
Taking the Museum resources directly into some of the lowest academically performing elementary schools in Tampa and bringing together children, families and teachers of all ethnicities and intellectual abilities to produce art that everyone can be proud of. The program brings artists into the schools, allows the children access to the Museum and culminates with an exhibition of student works at the Tampa Museum of Art.
Fine Arts Program for Exceptional Individuals
MacDonald Training Center
To expand the fine arts program for clients with mental disabilities in an effort to enrich their daily lives, encourage artistic impulses, creative thinking and problem solving, and to instill a sense of pride and personal accomplishment in participants. During the first year of this grant, participation in the program doubled. Participants developed studio skills and took weekly observational trips to museums, galleries and art studios stimulate their understanding and appreciation of art and its history.
Youth Concert Series
Florida Orchestra
Introducing fourth and fifth-grade students to live symphonic music in a way that supports the goals of elementary classroom teachers and music teachers. Concerts are offered during the school day for public, private and home-schooled students and are developed around specific themes with supporting curriculum to be used in the course of daily studies.
Arts Management Internship Program
Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center
Educating future arts administrators by providing professional training experiences in a state of the art cultural facility. Interns additionally offer hands-on support of educational programs matching their career interests, including orchestra, classical ballet and arts marketing.
Technology Upgrade & Leadership Development
Florida Orchestra
To support a substantial technology upgrade to solidify the organizational structure of the Orchestra’s management and development. Additionally, the Orchestra’s organizational capacity will be increased by obtaining orchstra-specific professional development for key employees.
Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center
To support arts education in underserved Hillsborough County Schools, including artist visits to schools, performing arts education in the school, field trips to theatre performances, and programs, as well as curriculum and workshops provided to school teachers.

Higher Education
Expanding Science Career Horizons
Flagler College
College education majors using Biotechnology to mentor middle school science students. Predominantly female education majors from Flagler College will be teaching and mentoring middle school science students through hands-on laboratory exercises focusing on DNA Biotechnology. At-risk female middle school students will have personal mentoring interaction with college students while increasing their interest in pursuing science studies and/or careers. Education majors will strengthen their skills and interest in science education careers.
Learning Resources Room
University of Tampa
Supporting an education center to be used to simulate classroom environments, provide teaching workshops for Hillsborough County public school teachers, and to house technology and educational materials for use by Education students, faculty, and public school teachers.
Elder Justice Resource Center
Stetson University College of Law
Offering direct services through an information and referral center for seniors who believe they have legal disputes and issues, especially civil legal problems. One-on-one assistance is provided to remove barriers seniors commonly face when navigating the legal system.
Meeting the Needs of Visually and Hearing Impaired Students
Flagler College
Provided technology equipment to assist visually and hearing impaired students, community members and educators. Braille printers, software, and scanners were acquired for translation of teaching materials for the visually impaired. Hearing impaired facilities were expanded to include computerized interactive audio-video stations for students majoring in deaf education and for hearing impaired students.
Second-Degree Nursing Student Scholarships
Jacksonville University
To provide scholarship support to non-traditional students obtaining second baccalaureate degrees in Nursing, for the purpose of obtaining the most qualified potential nurses to serve patients with the highest quality of care.
Minds-On, Hands-On: Partnering for Science in the High School
Flagler College
Presenting a three-day biotechnology workshop for high school science teachers and equipping each teacher with the knowledge and supplies to setup a biotechnology lab unit in the classroom.

Women’s Breast Cancer Outreach

Educating traditionally medically underserved women on breast cancer prevention. Major access barriers to healthcare are addressed by providing bi-lingual breast cancer education, screenings and follow-up services to women in lower socio-economic neighborhoods.
Medical Television Magazine Series
WEDU Public Television
Producing a monthly magazine health program series focusing on medical topics, research advancements, children’s health issues, healthy living and aging concerns that impact West Central Florida’s citizens.
Healthy Weight Clinic
University of South Florida
Supporting collaborative treatment through funding for data collection technology and ancillary services for patients with a variety of eating disorders, from obesity to anorexia.
Health & Wellness Program
MacDonald Training Center
To enhance the health of mentally challenged individuals by employing a fitness instructor to run the on-site Fitness Center and to operate the Health & Wellness Program.
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Pharmacy
Tampa General Hospital
To support the creation of an on-site pharmacy dedicated to handling neonatal and pediatric pharmacy services in an effort to increase the accuracy of medication provision for premature infants and children.
Ronald MacDonald Care Mobile Dental Days
University of South Florida
To administer dental care to underserved children through a community health care outreach program that brings treatment to children on-site at public schools.

Community Services
Rose Cottage Women’s Residential Treatment Program
Tampa Crossroads
Provided pilot year funding for a residential substance abuse treatment program focusing on mothers who are working to regain custody of their young children. This program provides substance abuse treatment, individual counseling, parenting skills, life skills education and employment readiness skills. A renewal of this grant has allowed for expansion of the Rose Cottage Program to include an Intensive Outpatient Treatment program.
Family Services Outreach
Salvation Army Tampa Area Command
Providing a safety net of special seasonal assistance for hardworking families who live at or below the Federal Poverty Level and are having trouble making ends meet. Special assistance is intended to prevent people from being forced into homelessness due to unforeseen events.
Nursing Staff Expansion
MacDonald Training Center
Expanding the Nursing staff to increase accessibility to medical care for mentally handicapped clients. Increased nursing staff allows better response time to medical issues, improved communication with outside health providers and greater involvement of RN community volunteers.
Enhancing Hospitality House
Salvation Army Tampa Area Command
Refurbishing the transitional housing facility for women and children, including upgrading family living areas, purchasing new mattresses for facility beds, and updating the library and technology room within the computer and career center for the use of clients seeking employment and for children completing schoolwork assignments. Creating a family friendly dining room was also accomplished by refurbishing the dining area to be a more home-like environment.
ATHENA Program: Transitional Housing Program for Female Veterans
Tampa Crossroads
To support one of the first programs for the underserved population of homeless female veterans, including rehabilitation, treatment, counseling and transitional housing.
Sulphur Springs Resource Center
United Way of Tampa Bay
Assisting neighborhood residents in overcoming individual barriers to employment and financial stability through job training, GED classes, individual case management, legal services, and personal finance skills training.
Volunteer Program
MacDonald Training Center
To fund a volunteer coordinator for the benefit of utilizing available, highly qualified volunteers to strengthen the center’s business capacity and enhance client services.
